MATHEMATICAL EVALUATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL NOISE POLLUTION IN OSHODI/ISOLO LOCAL GOVERNMENT OF LAGOS STATE, NIGERIA USING NOISE POLLUTION INDICES

Abstract: Evaluation of environmental noise is a way of quantifying the magnitude of exposure to noise in our environment which gives an insight on the need for engineering control. The aim of this work is to carry out mathematical evaluation of environmental noise pollution in Oshodi/Isolo Local Government of Lagos State, Nigeria. The noise pollution data generated in Oshodi/Isolo Local Government were fitted into noise pollution descriptor models using the in-built solver tool in Microsoft excel version 2007. The results revealed that lowest values of continuous sound pressure level (LAeq) obtained were 65.76, 71.19, 74.77, 75.21 and 70.18 dB (A) for educational, industrial, traffic, commercial and residential areas respectively. All the values were above the threshold limits stipulated by World Health Organisation (WHO) and National Environmental Standards and Regulations Agency (NASREA). The least values of noise pollution level (Lnp) obtained were 86.73, 73.76, 83.62, 82.87 and 73.85 dB (A) for educational, industrial, traffic, commercial and residential areas respectively. Moreover, the mean sound pressure level (Lm-n-e) values were 76.63, 77.63, 83.75, 85.56 and 76.93 dB (A) for educational, industrial, traffic, commercial and residential areas respectively which were also above the limits of WHO and NASREA. The noise climate (NC) indicated a variation in the sound pressure levels in all the areas examined while the noise index (NI) values were above the standard limits of WHO and NASREA for all the areas considered. The noise exposure index (NEI) values obtained in all the areas investigated were greater than 1 which is an indication that the people in the evaluated areas have the potential risk of hearing loss. It was concluded that Oshodi/Isolo Local Government of Lagos State was polluted and urgent actions needed to be carried to ameliorate the effects of the pollution.
